Caring Ministries

Sandia Counseling Center

The Sandia Counseling Center offers professional therapy for concerns that strike many persons, such as marriage and family matters, depression, life transitions, and grief resolution. All therapists with Sandia Counseling are professionally prepared and licensed by the State of New Mexico.

In addition, the combination of the Counseling Center and the church allows access to extended care for difficult situations. The church often is in a better position to respond to needs beyond the scope of professional therapy.

Deacon Support Services

Our Deacons assist the pastoral care staff and volunteers with visitation of the sick and hospitalized, as well as with other support services.

The little box onf the Welcome Center table in Fellowship Hall is a Deacons' Box for requests from congregation members who have concerns that the Deacons might be able to address.  Please use the cards by the box and put requests in the box, which is locked for privacy. The box is checked regularly so that actions can be taken promptly.

You may also contact the Deacons by e-mail: deacons@sandiapres.org, or by using the electronic request form below.

Health Ministry Unit

The Health Ministry Unit's mission is to assist those in our midst with questions of health, help with referrals for care, offer blood pressure checks and short consults on the last Sunday of each month, contribute periodic health advisory bulletins to the newsletter, and provide other services. Please see "More Information" below for health bulletins.

Prayer Shawls

SPC has people who knit and crochet prayer shawls for those needing God’s comfort and support during difficult times. Please contact Karen McCullough at 821-8511 or  kgmccullough[at]comcast[dot]net for information on how to become involved, or if you know someone who could benefit from a shawl.

Cancer Support. If you have experienced cancer (just diagnosed, patient, survivor, caregiver, friend, and/or family) and need information or contacts, or just want to talk to someone who has been there, Cancer Survivors Offering Support and SPC offer free support and one-on-one discussions for those in all stages of cancer and caregiving. Services are provided by trained cancer survivors and caregivers. (Professional medical advice, consultation or services not provided, but the group can help you find those services.) Call Cancer SOS (Eleanor Schick, 255-0405, eschick@swcp.com) or the church office for more information.

Spring 2012 Family Cancer Retreat. This April, over 250 people from more than 100 New Mexican families coping with cancer will attend the Family Cancer Retreat.  This free, three-day educational program provides New Mexico's adult cancer patients/survivors and their loved ones with the tools and information they need to better manage the treatment and survival process. The entire program, including meals, lodging, and all educational sessions, is provided at no cost to participants. This program is offered each year in Spring and Fall. Please see "More Information" on this page for the application packet, with details on the program and application process. Spaces fill up quickly, so please act soon!

Dance It Up! isn't a support group, but it fills a similar need, offering monthly dances and socializing for Albuquerque's autistic and developmentally delayed community (18+) and fun-loving friends. The next dance will be in March, due to Upward Basketball games in January and February.

Compassionate Friends, a support group for those who have lost children, meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7:00 p.m.

20/20 Club, a low-vision support group, meets the second Wednesday of most months, usually at 2:00 p.m.  On February 8 the meeting will focus on exercise, training, and support groups, as well as providing information on home care. For more information, or for help with transportation, call Barbara Free, 275-9952; or Ann Slease, 881-9443. There is no charge, and visitors are always welcome.
