SPC Postings

Meet-And-Greet. Join us for a get-acquainted session and dessert reception with our pastoral candidate, the Rev. Dr. Doug Hucke,  on Saturday, February 4, at 7:00 p.m., in the sanctuary. Here’s your chance to meet him in person and ask all those questions you’re longing to ask! Childcare will be available for birth through age 5. Information on Rev. Hucke was provided at the January 29 annual meeting and was mailed this week to all households. You may also find it under "More Information" on this page.

Congregational Meeting. The Session has called a Congregational Meeting for Sunday, February 5, to take place in the sanctuary immediately following the worship service, for the purpose of hearing the report of the Pastor Nominating Committee and acting on the nomination of their Candidate of Choice. There will be one worship service on that morning, beginning at 9:45 a.m. Sunday classes will be in recess, and child care will be provided through age 5.

2012-2013 Preschool Registration  Registration for curernt families and congregation members will be Friday February 17, at 9:15 a.m.  Registration packets can be picked up from the Preschool beginning February 1. Pre-K classes are M-F, and Preschool classes are M-W-F or Tuesday and Thursday, 9-12. For more information contact LeeAnna, Preschool Director, orLorna Loeffler, 856-5040..

Community Announcements

Spring 2012 Family Cancer Retreat. This April, over 250 people from more than 100 New Mexican families coping with cancer will attend the Family Cancer Retreat.  This free, three-day educational program provides New Mexico's adult cancer patients/survivors and their loved ones with the tools and information they need to better manage the treatment and survival process. The entire program, including meals, lodging, and all educational sessions, is provided at no cost to participants. This program is offered each year in Spring and Fall. Please see "More Information" on this page for the application packet, with details on the program and application process. Spaces fill up quickly, so please act soon!

Church Women United. This ecumenical Christian women's movement will meet on Friday, February 3, at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 5301 Ponderosa NE. The forum will begin at 9:30 a.m. with coffee fellowship, and the program will begin at 10:00. Claudia Medina, Executive Director of Enlace Comunitario, will be the speaker. The mission of Enlace is to eliminate domestic violence in the Latino immigrant community and to promote healthy families through intervention services, education, policy advocacy and leadership development. New and gently used books will be collected for Christina Kent Early Childhood Center. For more information, please call Helen LeKates at 883-6903.

Dance It Up! Dance It Up! offers monthly dances and socializing for Albuquerque's autistic and developmentally delayed community (18+) and fun-loving friends. The next dance will be in March, due to Upward Basketball games in January and February. 

Reading Tutors Needed. Looking for a way to help society? Wanting to stay active and use all your talents? Cherry Hills Library is looking for volunteer reading tutors to assist children in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. Livrary staff will train you in teaching techniques. If you can volunteer for one hour one day a week on a Monday or Friday morning, you may change a child's life! For more information, please contact Dana Goetz at 856-2609.

20/20 Club. Sandia hosts monthly educational/fellowship meetings for low-vision people and their families and/or caretakers. Meetings are usually on the second Wednesday of each month at 2:00 p.m.  On  February 8 the meeting will focus on exercise, training, and support groups, as well as providing information on home care.  For more information, or for help with transportation, call Barbara Free, 275-9952; or Ann Slease, 881-9443. There is no charge for meetings, and visitors are always welcome.

Resources and Recycling

Free Website for Severe Medical Situations. If you or someone you know is involved in a severe medical situation, check out www.caringbridge.org. This user-friendly site allows anyone to create a web page to connect family and friends during a critical illness, treatment, or recovery. No special software tools or training are needed. Pages are provided for My Story, Journal, Photos, and Guestboook, where people may leave messages of support.

Household Pharmaceutical Disposal Program. For doctor-prescribed and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, herbal supplements, and pet medications:

  1. Remove mecations from original containers, including foil packs, and place in resealable bag.
  2. Call the Metropolitan Forensic Science Center to ensure staff availability at 823-4200.
  3. Take to the Metropolitan Forensic Science Center on Thursdays, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., at 5350 2nd Street NW.

Do NOT put medicines down the sink or toilet--they contaminate our water supply.

Computer Recycling:
Computer ReRuns, 5445 Edith NE, is open Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. There is a $10 charge for monitors and television sets. Computer ReRuns refurbishes some computers for schools or other organizations, and ships the rest to Natural Solutions in Oklahoma for recycling.

Enchantment Electronic Recycling, 4400 Silver SE, Suite B, is open Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. There is a $10 charge for computer monitors and television sets. The firm takes "anything that plugs in or has batteries." The staff refurbish any equipment they can and send it to children in Mexico and Belize. Everything else is sent to a nationwide network of recyclers.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal:
The City of Albuquerque accepts household hazardous waste (paint, motor oil, cleaning supplies, etc.) at Raychem's facility on Edith Street:
